welcome!

We invite you to discover the creative potential of clay. As Southwestern Indiana’s only non-profit dedicated to the ceramic arts and artists, the mission at New Harmony Clay Project is to assist with this discovery—to foster an environment that supports the investigation of new ideas and work in the ceramic arts.

Founded in 1985, by Jane Blaffer Owen, New Harmony Clay Project’s studio was originally dedicated to the philosophy that the "creative crafts deserve the instruction, support and honor accorded the fine arts.” The studio became used for ceramics workshops and programming from local universities. It became clear after some time that New Harmony Clay Project’s focus could impact a greater community. In 2015, we developed a residency program that gave ceramic artists access to an immersive experience that could truly expand their creative ideas, while maintaining and expanding the educational programs offered to the public community.

We ask that you consider giving to New Harmony Clay Project today to help it continue guiding discovery and creating inspirational experiences that support our resident artists and students. A unique benefit of our residency program is that we have eliminated any of the associated program fees, the typical concerns for work/life balance and the need for general sustaining income for the residents. Studio space, materials, housing and a monthly stipend are part of the acceptance package for each artist. Individual donations enable us to continue offering this benefit and keep the pottery wheels spinning and kilns firing.

We know that clay can shape the lives of many. It can be a conduit of learning, creating and exploring. Discovery is someone making art with clay for the very first time. It’s teaching youth how to create something using just their hands and imaginations. It’s exploring an exhibition of work. It’s listening to an artist talk about her process. Every gift, no matter what size, encourages discovery and will ensure that our artists and community achieves the highest level of artistic, programmatic and educational excellence.
